阆中历史悠久。战国中期曾为巴国国都。公元前314年，秦灭巴，秦惠王设置阆中县，至今已有2300多年的历史。历代王朝都在这里设置郡、州、府、道。蜀汉名将张飞镇守阆中达七年之久。在漫长的历史长河中，阆中一直是川北政治、经济、军事、文化中心。1991年撤县建市，为四川省直辖市。

    阆中是川陕老革命根据地。1993年，李先念、徐向前、廖承志等老一辈无产阶级革命家先后在这里转战三年之久，1.9万名阆中儿女参加了红军,7000多人成为革命烈士。

    阆中是一座独具魅力的旅游城市，素有“阆苑仙境”之誉，唐代诗人杜甫在这里留下了“阆中胜事可断肠，阆州城南天下稀”的千古名句。历史给予了阆中丰厚的馈赠，留下了辉煌灿烂的文化和众多珍贵的名胜古迹，至今闪烁着夺目的异彩。

    保护完好的唐、宋、元、明、清各个历史时期的数十处祠堂庙宇、寺院楼阁、摩岩石刻以及堪称全国一流的古民居保护区，构成了阆中旅游资源的独特优势和丰富的文化内涵，极具研究价值和观赏价值。

    风光秀丽的锦屏山，有“嘉陵第一江山”之称。登临此山，观阆苑山水城郭，如置身仙境。与张飞庙，大佛寺，滕王阁，桓候祠，伊斯兰教圣地巴巴寺，天宫院等闻名于世。尤其是气势辉宏的张飞庙，隆冢为丘的张飞墓，以及张飞大败张合的古战场遗迹，是三国黄金旅游热线不可或缺的重要组成部分。
   
    文化

    阆中的美食文化源远流长，由回、汉、满多民族饮食文化构成，风味小吃花色品种众多，烹调技艺高超。从汉唐到明清，阆中人到京城作官，皇室也有王子封藩阆中，京城和宫廷饮食文化流传到阆中。满人饮食文化与汉人饮食文化交流融会，阆中便有了“满汉全席”。清初伊斯兰教传入阆中，又带来回民饮食文化，形成多种多样的风味小吃。牛肉凉面，锭子锅盔·糖烧馍，火锅红烧牛肉，热卤烧腊，保宁白糖蒸馍，川北凉粉·热凉等誉满全川。

    阆中山清水美，才俊辈出。据载人祖伏羲的母亲华胥就是阆中人，华胥在阆中南池(古称“彭池”)边孕育伏羲，阆中先民传说，伏羲就是生在阆中的。伏羲最终成为一代人皇，创造了辉煌的华夏古文化。渡沔侯范目，天文历算学家落下闳，天文学家任文公，政治家杨仁，儒林校尉周群，镇南大将军马忠等一大批名人志士都是阆中人，梧桐双凤尹枢、尹极，鲜于，岳飞爱将（女婿）张宪，蜀中“花木兰”韩娥也都出自这“阆苑仙境”。

    阆中丝绸、皮革、地毯、食醋享誉全国。张飞酒相传已有1700多年的历史。据说张飞就是喝这种酒打败了魏国大将张合的，有"桓侯不厌醉千场"的故事流传。保宁醋为全国四大名醋之一，因产地阆中为历史上保宁府所在地而得。1915年获巴拿马太平洋万国博览会金奖，多次荣获国家级金奖。保宁醋香飘五大洲，有“离开保宁醋，川菜无客顾”之说。

    古城阆中，曾为巴子国国都，巴人与汉民族长期聚居，形成一种具有鲜地方特色的民俗文化，成为阆中历史文化的重要组成部分。巴渝舞是古巴人在同猛兽、部族斗争中发展起来的一种集体武舞。川北灯戏，又称“鼓乐神”，是流行在川北一带历史悠久的民间歌舞小戏。川北灯戏的内容，多取材于民间传说和劳动人民的生活。喜剧多、悲剧少。
